Indigenous Cultural Day Tour: Daintree & Mossman Gorge

About this experience

On most Daintree tours, culture is one stop in a day built around the river and the beach. This one turns that around. Bama Bubu Cultural Tours is led by Kuku Yalanji Traditional Custodians, and the day follows their Country: a smoking and grounding ceremony, time at Cooya Beach (Kuyu Kuyu) with saltwater people talking about tides and seasons, a cultural walk at Mossman Gorge, tool-making grounds in the Whyanbeel Valley and stone fish traps at Rocky Point. Bush tucker and medicinal plants come up all day, and lunch is on Country.

In the afternoon the group heads to the Daintree River, Cape Kimberley and Cape Tribulation. The Eastern Kuku Yalanji are the Traditional Owners of Daintree National Park, which was handed back in 2021 and is now jointly managed with the Queensland Government (Queensland Parks culture page).

This is a newer tour, and the plan can bend. One guest wrote that their group skipped Cooya Beach, Whyanbeel and Rocky Point when the day ran slow. If a particular stop matters to you, ask before you book. Groups are small, ten at most, and the tour is not suitable for children under five or people with limited mobility.

Tips before you book

  • Ask questions. The day works best as a conversation, and the guides share family stories.
  • Wear shoes you can get sandy and wet for the beach and the fish traps.
  • Ask the operator whether all stops are planned for your date, since the schedule can change.
  • Bring a hat and sunscreen. Cooya Beach and Rocky Point are open to the sun.
  • Want a shorter taste first? The Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk at Mossman Gorge runs about 1.5 hours.
