Booking choice: The Daintree and Mossman Gorge day from Cairns, 11 hours from Cairns. Book this Tour details
Most people visit the Daintree from Cairns, and most of them do it in a day. It is possible and it is worth it. It is also long: about two and a half hours each way to Cape Tribulation before you add stops, lunch or a queue at the ferry.
This guide sets out the legs of the drive, the ferry, where to buy fuel, what the bus can and cannot do, and a plan for the day, whether you drive or book a seat.
The quick answer
Yes, you can do the Daintree in a day from Cairns. Allow about two hours to the river and two and a half to Cape Tribulation, each way. Day tours from Cairns run 11 to 12 hours with about five of them on the road. If you can, base yourself in Port Douglas, which is 45 minutes from the river.
Can you do a Daintree day trip from Cairns?
Yes. A tour takes 11 to 12 hours door to door; a self-drive day needs an early start and a return before dark.
A day from Cairns follows the coast to Port Douglas, turns inland at Mossman, crosses the river on the cable ferry and runs up to Cape Tribulation. With a tour, you sit back for the road and spend roughly six hours at the stops. Driving yourself, you control the order and can stay later, but you also drive about five hours.
Is it rushed? A little. Guests on the Daintree and Mossman Gorge tour get two hours at Mossman Gorge, an hour on the river and a guided walk, which is enough for a first look. Shota, a guest from Japan, wrote: "We were able to see 5 crocodiles and learned the ecosystem of the river."
Pickup from 35 Cairns stops, breakfast and lunch, the river cruise, the ferry and Cape Tribulation.
Book thisHow long is the drive from Cairns to the Daintree?
About two hours to the Daintree River ferry and about two and a half hours to Cape Tribulation, without stops.
Here is the drive leg by leg, using figures from the parks service and local tourism bodies. Times are without stops or queues.
| Leg | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Cairns to Port Douglas | About 63 km | About 1 hour |
| Port Douglas to Mossman | About 14 km | About 15 min |
| Mossman to the ferry | About 30 km | About 30 min |
| The ferry crossing | Across the river | About 15 min with loading |
| Ferry to Cape Tribulation | About 35 km | 40 to 50 min |
| Cairns to Cape Tribulation | About 140 km | About 2.5 hours |
North of the ferry the road is sealed but narrow and winding, with cassowary crossings. Drive it slowly.

Is the Daintree closer to Cairns or Port Douglas?
Port Douglas. It is about 45 minutes from the river, against about two hours from Cairns.
That difference shapes every tour. Port Douglas tours run around 9 hours and spend about three of them driving. Cairns tours run 11 to 12 hours and spend about five. If your trip allows a night or two in Port Douglas, your Daintree day becomes noticeably easier, and the Port Douglas tour or the Best of Daintree tour become options.
Staying in Cairns? The premium small-group tour picks up in Cairns from 7:00am, in Palm Cove and in Port Douglas, so the same bus can serve both towns.

Two hours less on the road: the Daintree highlights from Port Douglas, with lunch at a rainforest lodge.
Book this Tour detailsWhat is the closest town to the Daintree?
Mossman, 30 km south of the river crossing. It is the last place with a full range of fuel, food and shops.
Mossman is also the turn for Mossman Gorge, the southern section of Daintree National Park. Daintree Village is further on, south of the river, about 10 km past the ferry turnoff. It is small, with a few cafes, and is where the Upper Daintree croc cruises leave. You do not need the ferry to reach it.
North of the river, Cow Bay and Cape Tribulation are scattered settlements, mostly off-grid. Fuel is sold at the Rainforest Village, 34 km past the ferry. Mobile coverage is patchy, so download maps and tickets before you go.

Is there a bus from Cairns to the Daintree?
Not a daily one. A 4WD coach runs from Cairns to Cape Tribulation and Cooktown on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The Trans North coastal service leaves Cairns at 6:30am and calls at Port Douglas, Mossman and the Daintree Ferry before reaching Cape Tribulation at 9:17am. Southbound it leaves Cape Tribulation at 3:15pm. Check that the return runs on the day you travel before you plan a day trip around it.
For most people without a car, a tour with hotel pickup is simpler. The bus suits a stay of a night or more at Cape Tribulation.
Can you do a half-day Daintree trip from Cairns?
Not in any useful way. The return drive alone is about five hours. If you only have half a day, go to Kuranda instead.
Mossman Gorge on its own is possible in half a day by car, at about 80 km each way. It misses the river, the ferry and Cape Tribulation, which is most of what people mean by the Daintree. Kuranda, about 35 minutes from Cairns, is the classic half-day rainforest trip. Daintree or Kuranda compares the two.
What does a one-day Daintree itinerary look like?
Leave Cairns early, cruise the river on the way north, spend the middle of the day north of the ferry and start back by mid-afternoon.
Here is a self-drive plan built on the drive times above. Adjust it to the season: daylight is shorter in the cooler months.
| Time | Stop | Why then |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00am | Leave Cairns on the coast road | An early start keeps the day unhurried |
| 9:00am | River cruise from the Ferry Gateway | South bank; check cruise times |
| 10:15am | Ferry, then Alexandra Lookout | The view over the river mouth |
| 11:00am | Jindalba or Madja boardwalk | Short, flat, easy to fit in |
| 12:30pm | Lunch at Cape Tribulation, then Kulki | The beach and the cape |
| 2:00pm | Dubuji boardwalk | Forest, mangroves and Myall Beach |
| 3:00pm | Start back south | Ferry and the coast road before dark |
Driving after dark is the part to avoid. Vehicle strikes are the leading cause of death for adult cassowaries, and the road north of the ferry has no lights.

Do you need to book the Daintree River ferry?
No. It runs from 5am to midnight every day, and you can pay at the booth or on board by cash or card.
Buying online gives you a QR code and saves a minute. Download it before you leave, since reception near the ferry is poor. In peak season, queues can stretch back along the road, and landside works with single-lane traffic run until the end of October 2026. What changed this year, from the new operator to the new ferry due in late 2027, is in our ferry update. Day tours handle the crossing for you.

No ferry queue to plan around: the 4WD day includes the crossing, a river cruise, lunch and a swim in the forest.
Book thisFrequently asked questions
Can I take a rental car to Cape Tribulation?
Usually, since the road is sealed, but some rental companies restrict roads north of the river. Read your contract. The Bloomfield Track beyond Cape Tribulation is 4WD only.
What time do Daintree tours leave Cairns?
Early. The premium tour picks up in the Cairns CBD from 7:00am, for example. Your exact time comes with the booking, and the 4WD tour asks you to confirm your pickup time 48 hours ahead.
Is it better to stay overnight in the Daintree?
If you can. A night north of the river lets you walk the boardwalks early, take a night walk and avoid driving after dark.
Can I combine the Daintree and the reef from Cairns?
Yes, on separate days. The two-day reef and rainforest package books an outer reef cruise and a Daintree day together, on dates you choose.
